The Advantages and Disadvantages of R&D Outsourcing

Small to medium-sized companies need research and development or R&D to acquire knowledge related to the business. Research and development is needed before releasing new products and services or improving existing ones. Compared to in-house research and development, R&D outsourcing is a newer, cheaper alternative to acquiring the needed knowledge to improve business sales and profits.

Traditionally, R&D outsourcing professionals such as scientists and engineers were hired to work in the office. It is also possible to hire companies who may offer similar services. With the emergence and spread of the Internet, globalization of services became easier. R&D outsourcing became simpler and cheaper. Smaller businesses could choose from a wide variety of freelance scientists and engineers coming from various parts of the world. The increase in competition makes prices and rates lower, allowing companies to specify particular needs and choose from a wider range of rates and expertise.
For both provider and client, opting for R&D outsourcing services is cheaper as there is less manpower involved. Both provider and client no longer need additional office space to house the manpower or equipment needed to perform the research and development.
Although opting for R&D outsourcing services amounts to greater quality of services and savings for the company, it also poses a lot of problems. In previous years, the United States was considered at the forefront in providing quality services related in research and development. However, with the growing popularity of R&D outsourcing services, the United States is slowly been overtaken by other countries. Some of these countries include China, India and Eastern Europe. China in particular produces hundreds and thousands of engineers and scientists each year while the US produces only a tenth of this amount. The lower rates being offered by foreign scientists and engineers increase the likelihood of hiring a foreigner instead of a professional from the United States. This decreases the amount of opportunities being offered to professionals in the United States. Proposals and attempts to change this trend are being undertaken, although it may take time for such results to emerge.

Another major concern with opting for R&D outsourcing services is the change in laws protecting intellectual property or IP rights. There are significant differences in how the United States and other countries protect the company’s IP rights. Leaks to competitors may be rare but not unheard of. Businesses will need to take greater precautions in order to select companies or institutions that can safeguard the research and technology being developed.
There a few ways how R&D is outsourced, the first involves hiring universities or non-profit research groups to do the tasks. Larger organizations and schools will have the necessary equipment and the right experienced scientists, engineers or personnel to undertake the task. What makes this option affordable is when graduate students perform the work as compared to actual professionals.

Another R&D outsourcing option is performing a joint project. Several groups or companies are taken for a single project. With several different groups becoming involved, the same resources or equipment is used, leading to greater savings. There is also a bigger pool of researchers and professionals who can do the work and research.
